Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses. | Numbers 9:22-23
Our Guiding Light
I am inspired by the presence of God in this passage. This story gives us a really great perspective on the presence of God. The Bible teaches that God revealed himself and gave commands to the children of Israel through a cloud. The people were responsive to the commands of God through the movement of the cloud. So, the children followed the cloud. The scriptures are simple in detail—where the cloud went, so did the people. When it settled in a certain place, so did the people. No matter the distance, if God moved, the people moved. The problem is in the fact that they were often confused and hesitant to follow where God was leading them. They weren’t confused about the direction. They were just hesitant to trust it. This is where their story becomes our story. God is still leading us, although you could argue the directions are not quite as obvious. Yet we still have been given a perfect guide. For some reason, He has determined our new map will be his holy word. As we recognize the presence of God in it like our spiritual ancestors, then we follow where He leads. His word is the guide, and He is the Light that will direct our journey. It is both that simple and that difficult. Shalom!
